About Immanuel Benveniste

Immanuel Benveniste (Venice 1608-Amsterdam c.1660) was an Italian Jewish printer in Amsterdam who printed many Hebrew works including an edition of the Talmud from 1644-48.

He was one of a number of notable Portuguese Jewish printers at Amsterdam in the seventeenth century, including Manasseh ben Israel, David de Castro Tartas, and Joseph and Immanuel Athias. Benveniste also published the sermons of Saul Levi Morteira in 1652.

There isn't much about Immanuel Benveniste. In 5399 or 1639 he becane a member of the brotherhood Ets Haim, which provided support for students, In the same year he became a member of Honen Dalim, another charity. His name is not under the statutes of the Amsterdam Portuguese Jeiwsh Community, but he signed the very first revision of the statutes. From his marriage bans of the 4th of January 1640 - see image - we learn that he came from Venice, that his parents were alive - maybe in Venice? - and that his brother in law is Emanuel Duarte Brandon. His wife is another Benveniste, Branca, she is from Trancoso, Portugal. I could not find anything about this brother in law. He had a printing business, which was very active, but he does not seem to have made a lot of money from it. [Ton Tielen]

He died the 18th of Heshvan 5425

The Fintas - synagoge tax - of Imanuel Benveniste was fixed at 6 guilders per year - solid middle middle class. His Promesas - voluntary contributions - varied, but peaked around the time of his wifes death. His Ymposta - a tax of one thousandst on each foreign business deal - was modest compared with some others, but most Portuguese Jews were not international merchants. So he traded outside the Netherlands Republic. The following entries are from City ARchives Amsterdam, 334, Portuguese Jewish Community 172, Journal of income and expenses.
