About Ingeborg Persson

GEDCOM Note

Ingeborg came to Amerika in 1869 with her sister Signet. There is an indication that it may have been 1868 based on info attached with Anna Mathilda Peterson, her daughter.

In a letter from Melanie Cottam, July 26, 1996 the following stories are related: "Grandma Nellie Sparlin told me they (Johan & Guinild Persson) left from Stockholm, it is likely... (Johan is Ingeborg's brother). They were farmers. I know for sure that they landed in Quebec, Canada. I was told that they lost three weeks because of a storm that swept them back to sea as they neared Canada. I do not know how they traveled from there. I always heard that there were five brothers that came. I know that this doesn't all match, but that was the handed down oral story. I have also been told that one brother was a "jigger," a dancer, and that he went to NY to work. Concerning the brothers in California. These are separate incidence. John Peterson (Johan Persson) went to California in one of the gold rush calls. He was gone two years and when he returned home, Gunella (Guinild Persson/Larsdotter his wife) thought that a ragged beggar was walking down the road. He had sold his team to have food and lodging and told that he had a few nuggets of gold that were stolen from him. He said he had run into his brother who had come from Sweden on the boat with. He literally walked home from California. {{I, Byron Wiley, have not been able to verify that other brothers came over as of 05/25/1999. I wonder if this story is involving (and evolving from another source) the August Peterson and J.S. Peterson "Fen" from Rock Island Illinois descending from Johan Persson's sister. (These are the children of Ingeborg) There is also a 'mysterious' article about these particular brothers which I believe was convoluted a bit, causing the confusion. There has been confusion between the 'two' John Peterson's, one is Johan Persson born in 1826 and his son John August Peterson born in 1859. Again it is likely that John August was the one that may have seen his 'cousin' or it was just based on the newspaper article where August and Fen met each other.}} Melanie continues, "Mother said some relatives corresponded with Grandma Sparlin (Nellie) from Moline and the letters eventually stopped coming. She did not save the letters but in an older address book may be able to find the name. The Peterson's all lived near Frog Pond School (between Seneca and Racine Missouri). They had a literary society and the women of the time learned long recitations that they dramatically gave. ... Also she had told me before that her Great Grandfather (I assume Johan Persson from other interviews) wasn't mentally right in his late years. With that situation the children probably didn't see too much of him."

To further confirm this family together I looked at the emigration records from Göteborg in 1869. I found Ingborg Pettersson, Håkan Håkansson and Signeld all on the same contract for passage to America. We need to order a copy of the contract and a ship's registration list.
