About Ingeborg Jensdatter Susaas

Her nephew, Henry Augustinus Johnson from USA, visited her in June 17. 1851. He described her so: I think my aunt met us at the door, she was dressed in a dark coarse woolen dress and a new handkerchief carried over her hair. My aunt Ingeborg is a very good looking old woman – complexion fair – somewhat taller that my aunt Anne and stoops a little in the shoulders probably on account of her asthma from which she has suffered for many years. – Otherwise she told me her health was very good. Her eyes are blue and handsome – she has the same small nose - In her manner she was very mild and pleasing – her smile was very pleasant – she presents somewhat of a contrast with her younger sister who was more quick in her movements and conversation. I know my aunt Ingeborg must have been handsome when she was young. My aunt said she remembered my father very well – she was 15 years old when he was last in Norway – she saw him in Graver – He came very unexpectedly – intended to have remained the whole winter – and his chambers in Skien – but the war coming on cut short his visit – and he remained in Norway only about 6 weeks – the sister said they were afraid of him when he returned he was such a fine gentleman. Father then had the asthma – he could not eat their food – bought wine in town. As soon as father arrived at Graver all the family were sent for. The last Sunday he was here he read a sermon and sung psalms with them – Before my father left he used to go out with the cattle like the other boys. They remembered? Of his having thrown an axe at a cow and wounded her so they were obliged to kill her – My aunts, like all the rest of the family, are Lutherans – often go to church and to communion twice a year – The church at Romnes is that where all the family and my father among the rest were baptized – They were sure that it was this church where grandfather and grandmother went to church and where my father was baptized. Grandfather became blind some 22 years before he died – he had lost his eyes before the younger of these two aunts was born and of course he did not see my father when he visited Norway in 1807.
