Ira's parents and siblings emigrated to Kirtland in 1833. He was baptized in 1836 and went with his father's family to Missouri. When the problems arose, they left there and went to Nauvoo, where his father died.

Ira and his brother started West with the first group in 1846. After arriving in Council Bluffs, Ira was counseled to return and help his mother and her family to emigrate. They spent the winter in Council Bluffs. Ira asked if he could go West with the first group, but while cutting wood he cut his foot and was laid up.

Finally in 1850 he started for the Valley with the Steve Markham company. After arriving in Utah, 3 October 1850, they went to Herriman to live. He married his second wife before leaving Salt Lake City. In Herriman they consecrated all their property to the Church and lived the United Order. They left for a time when Johnston's Army came but soon moved back to Herriman where Ira later died.
