Irvin Nicholas Cooney, 92, of West Terre Haute, p[assed away at 10:34 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2015, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was employed for many years in farming, and retired from Weston Paper Mill at Terre Haute in 1987, after many years of service. He was born Nov. 28, 1922, in Hancock County, Ind., to Clarence Coleman and Minnie Mae Bain Cooney. His wife of 68 years, Betty Virginia Cox Cooney, whom he married Oct. 6, 1946, in the River Avenue Baptist Church in Indianapolis, preceded him in death Nov. 18, 2014. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law.
Irvin was a U.S. Navy veteran of W.W.II, during which he attained the rank of Gunner's Mate Second Class, and was assigned to ships which patrolled the Mediterranean as well as the Pacific. Irvin enjoyed farming and gardening and attending horticulture school after his military service on the GI Bill. He was an active member of the Trinity Church near Shepardsville, Ind. Irvin loved life, and was a loving husband and father.
