About Isaac Raphael Belilios
Death Notice in the Straits Times 18 October 1910, Page 11
On September 10, 1910, a former resident of Singapore, Isaac Raphael Belilios, passed away at Calcutta. .... Abdul Odood continues to carry on the business in Singapore on behalf of the widow, mrs. Rebecca Belilios, and he has been in charge of the business for the last 36 years. The widow will carry on the business in her own name.
In his book “Postmodern Singapore,” William Siew Wai Lim writes that that I.R. Belilios, a Venetian Jew born in Calcutta, dominated the cattle trade in Singapore from 1887 to 1921.
On the other hand, a database of Calcutta graves lists an Isaac Raphael Belilios who was born in 1846 and died in 1914.
Thus it is not clear whether Isaac Raphael and I.R. are the same person or not.
Several streets in Singapore are named after I.R. Belilios, including Belilios Road, Belilios Lane, and Belilios Terrace. His domain (in Singapore’s Little India) comprised the territory traversed by Chander Road, Rotan Lane, Klang Lane, and Belilios Lane. Belilios Road was originally a private access road to his property.
