About Isaac Greene Kuykendall
STORY FROM Marshall E. Kuykendall : ON MISSING KINFOLKS:
It has always been known that we have a Black cousin in our family and in my research years, I tried time and time again to find her, but to no avail. Then one day, while talking to my Cousin H. H. Phillips over at his ranch on the Blanco River, he mentioned that he had just received a nice letter from "Laura" asking about the family and had he seen any of the Kuykendalls lately. This was about 1995, so I said, Cousin, that could not be "our" Laura Kuykendall Yonge cause she was born in 1895. Well, Cousin HH insisted and as soon as he got back to his home in San Antonio, he called me on the tele. and sure enough, gave me "Laura's" phone number down out of Houston. Well, you can imagine my delight that I was finally gonna be able to visit with and perhaps meet my long lost cousin, so I dialed her number, expecting to hear a very, very old voice on the phone and to my surprise, a very young voice answered, and said, Yes, she was, indeed, Laura, but not the one I expected. Then she laughed and said, you see, Cousin Marshall, the Laura you were looking for was my mother, and I am the youngest of her 13 children and she named me, LAURA. Well, not having a clue as to who her grandfather was and thinking all along it was probably my grandfather, Gill, but she surprised me and said, Oh, No, my grandfather was Isaac Kuykendall. I was blown away-Isaac Green Kuykendall-1875-1895-my great uncle, who died in Indian Territory on the Miller 101 Ranch of pneumonia in December of 1895 while holding cattle for the Miller/Kuykendall partnership.
whoda thunk it ?? Laura is a retired school teacher and not long after our great visit, she came to Austin for a Teacher Convention of some sorts and Bro. Gil and I had the profound pleasure of meeting our lovely long lost cousin. That little Black child peeking around the corner of the buggy is her mother- Laura-foto taken about 1900 in Matagorda County on the Kuykendall Buckeye Ranch.
