Biography

Isaac Scarboro son of Robert Scarboro and Mary Bailey was born about 1756 in Bedford Co., Virginia, died CA 1819 in Gallia Co., Ohio and was buried in Gallia Co., Ohio. Some reference has birth December 6, 1745? Isaac served in Pennsylvania and Virginia Militia units in 1776-79. He married Mary Ward in 1773. Mary was a daughter of Major John Ward and Ann Chiles, though many sources show Major Ward will probate in 1816 instead of 1782, so her father may be a different John Ward. Isaac was the executor for the will of his father-in-law, John Ward, in Bedford County in 1782. He moved to Greenbrier Co VA (later Monroe Co WV) about 1786 where his parents, Robert Scarboro and Mary Bailey, were living. From there, he and his sons Zachariah and John moved to Clear Creek, Coal River, Virginia. He sold his land in Virginia in 1818, and he and his son Zachariah moved to Lawrence County, Ohio. He was not listed in the 1820 census, so he probably died before then.<ref>Entered by Bob Fields, Jan 22, 2012</ref>
About June, 1778, Isaac Scarbrough reported for military muster with the 14th Virginia Foot Regiment. I am unclear whether he was still a member of the Quaker church at the time, as his parents had been, or if he had left the church prior to reporting for military service. He may have been disowned by the church for his military service. Most of Isaac's militia service was spent in Pennsylvania and New York, and much of it was spent on the sick roll. He was discharged from duty in February, 1779. I have copies of his pay and muster rolls. His service was well after the celebrated "crossing of the Delaware" but during what has been described as "the agony at Valley Forge" which ended on June 19.<ref>http://my.richnet.net/~rbower/Scarberry/page7.html</ref>

Isaac went to Monroe county to where is father was, about 1786-88.He was executor of John Ward's will dated 1782 in Bedford Co., Va. From there he went to Clear Creek, WV with his sons John and Zachariah about 1812. Isaac and Zachariah then went to Lawrence Co., Ohio about 1816 & sold property in 1818 here in WV. Was listed as son of Rob Scarborough in 1762 Bedford Co., court records. He was on 1799 tax list of Greenbrier Co., Va. On 23 Feb 1778 he enlisted in Augusta Co., Va., 14th Virginia Regiment & then into the 10th.

They had the following children: i. John Ward Scarboro was born Ca 1773-75 in Bedford Co., Virginia, died in 1863 in Rock Creek, WV and was buried in 1863 in Workman's Creek Cem., Clear Creek, WV. He married Eleanor Harper. ii. Rachel Scarboro was born Ca 1776 in Virginia and died on 7 Feb 1872 in Raleigh Co, Clear Fork, WV. She married Reason Wriston. iii. Robert (Robin) Scarboro was born Cir 1782 in Virginia, died in Mossy, WV and was buried in Mossy, WV. iv. Zachariah Scarboro was born CA 1785 in Monroe Co., Va., Now WV and died about 1856 in Gallia Co., Ohio v. Mary "Polly" Scarboro was born Ca 1788/89 in Virginia and died on 21 Jun 1843. She married Elijah Stover, son of Jacob Stover and Sarah McGhee. He was born Abt. 1789 in VA, and died October 08, 1824 in Gallia Co.,OH.

vi. Joseph Scarboro was born CA 1790/92 in Monroe Co., WV. Joseph married Rachel Chapman, daughter of George Jackson Chapman and Patience Clay.

vii. Betsey Elizabeth Scarboro was born CA 1793/95.

Betsey married Jim Canter on 11 Sep 1817 in Lawrence Co, Ohio. Isaac's military service earned him the right to a "land warrant", a free tract of land, typically of 100 - 400 acres in unsettled parts of the United States. These were generally assigned by lottery, and were in lieu of wages which Congress could not afford to pay. Isaac's warrant of 170 acres was assigned to him on 11 March, 1786. The tract is described as in the Back Creek district of Greenbrier County, Virginia, now Monroe County, West Virginia. He apparently soon moved his family there, because his name appears on the tax roles for that county in 1787, and on 23 March, 1788 he bought an additional 200 acres in the same district of Greenbrier County, most likely from another Revolutionary War veteran who did not care to move his family into what was then wilderness. Isaac's name appears again on the tax roles for Greenbrier County in 1796 (in which he is listed as the owner of one black slave), and in the 1799 tax role when the area was split off into Monroe County.<ref>http://my.richnet.net/~rbower/Scarberry/page7.html</ref> Isaac is said to have had at least 14 children. This is the line of Arthur J Wriston, PO Box 12, Hawaii National Forest, Hawaii 96718. Isaac is identified as son of Robert in 1762 Bedford VA records when he and several siblings were placed in custody of the church wardens of Russell Parish, since Robert was too poor to feed them. He enlisted in the Revolutionary War from Brunswick Co VA, moved to Greenbriar Co 1788 (Land surveyed) and received land on Cole (coal) River 1815. Logan Co. (now Raleigh Co. WV) but actually settled there in 1800 on ClearFork. Sons Zechariah and John Ward also lived along this stream and took claim in 1815.<ref>CABINS OFTHE LOOP</ref>. Sold land 1818 and finally lived with son Zechariah in Lawrence Co OH until his death.<ref>BEDFORD CO VA WILLS, INVENTORIES & ACCOUNTS 1754/1787 P 430/431</ref> Sometime after 1799, Isaac Scarbrough moved to Lawrence County, Ohio. He is in the tax role for Windsor Township in 1818, and in the Federal census for 1820 for Lawrence County. He died there in 1825. His name is found variously spelled in old records as "Scarborough" and "Scarbrow". The Scarboro family can be traced back to John Scarboro living in England in 1550. The name Scarboro has been spelled many ways. In England it was listed as "Skarborowe." Isaac's ancestor, John Scarboro, II, was the one who came to America and settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, by the year 1690. The Scarboro family was Quakers, and a lot can be learned about the early families through church records. Some of John's descendants migrated south to Bedford County, Virginia. The spelling Scarborough, Scarbro, and Scarberry are found in the early Raleigh County records. Issac Scarboro<ref>http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=document&guid=1b0d9040-8297-47ca-a5e...</ref>
