__________
Elisabeth of Culemborg (Gelmelslot, Hoogstraten, March 30, 1475 - Culemborg, December 9, 1555), nicknamed "Lady Elisabeth," was the last lady of the seigniory of Culemborg.

She was the wealthy heiress daughter of Jasper of Culemborg and Johanna of Burgundy (1457-1511). Elisabeth married Jan van Luxemburg-Ville, lord of Ville, who died in 1508, in 1491. Then, in 1509, this first lady-in-waiting and niece of Archduchess Margaret of Austria married Anthony I of Lalaing. Anthony became acting governor of the Netherlands in 1530. She had also been court lady to Johanna of Castile, from 1496 until Johanna married.

She gave her husband first usufruct and later full ownership of the seigneuries of Hoogstraten, Minderhout and Rijkevorsel and her properties in Meer, Meerle and Meersel, in addition to the so-called courts of Hoogstraten in Brussels and Mechelen.
Elizabeth loved art and architecture, as well as supported the building of homes for the elderly and mentally ill. She was partly known as a devout Catholic and fiercely opposed to Protestants and the Reformation. She interfered with the banning of "heretical" books, such as the books of Erasmus, and allowed the Order of Jesuits to settle in Culemborg.[1]
The Land of Hoogstraten was again unified and elevated to the county of Hoogstraten by Emperor Charles on November 25, 1518. From then on, the count allowed himself to be called Hoogstraten for short.
After the death of her husband Antoon in 1540, Elisabeth herself was already about 65 years old and decided to make her own will. She bequeathed the goods in Hoogstraten to her cousin Philip of Lalaing and the goods in and around Culemborg to her cousin Floris van Pallandt. She decided in 1542 to raise the then 3-year-old Floris herself in her castle at Culemborg,[2] though she herself kept the usufruct over Culemborg until her death. From the last Count of Virneburg-Neuenahr, Elisabeth bought the seigniory of Sombreffe in 1543, just before his death,[3] as a result of which she was listed in 1550 as: "Elisabeth of Culemborch, Countess of Hoochstraten, lady of Culemborch, Borssele and Sombreffe, douairière of Montigny, Lense and Estrees."[4]

Shortly before her death, Emperor Charles V elevated the seigniory of Culemborg to a county. In her will, she stipulated that her estate should be spent on the "regte poor. The executors of the will decided to build an orphanage. This house remained in existence until 1952.
