About Isabella Matilda Cutbill
Hawkes Bay Herald, Saturday 01 June 1867 Marriage CUTBILL - RHODES : At Clive Grange, near Napier (residence of the brides father), on 30 May, by the Rev. J. TOWNSEND, Henry D.A. CUTBILL Esq, Lieut HM 1st Battalion 12th Regiment, son of T.S. CUTBILL Esq of Lawrie Park, Sydenham, Kent to Isabella Matilda, younger daughter of Joseph RHODES Esq, JP. Due to the flooding the guests had to be taken in boats. Bridesmaids were: Miss RHODES, brides elder sister, Miss RHODES, daughter of W.B. RHODES Esq, Wellington, and the two Miss TYLEE
The Hawkes Bay Herald of Saturday publishes the following item of "Hymeneal " intelligence:-"We cannot at this time record many occurences of a pleasing character -the bad weather and its devestating effects being the prevailing theme. It is therefore with peculiar pleasure that we chronicle the event of an interesting and felicitous character, which occurred on the morning of Thursday last. We allude to the marriage of Lieut. Cutbill of HM 12th Rgt - a young gentleman who, during his short residence in Napier has made many friends, and been universally esteemed - to Miss Isabella Rhodes the younger daughter of Joseph Rhodes, Esq, of Clive Grange. Never perhaps, was a marriage ceremony performed under so many difficulties. The country was nearly all under water and the Tuki Tuki ( which separates Mr Rhodes house from town) was running like a millrace. It could only be crossed through boats being tracked a long way upstream and then shot across, and even then at no inconsiderable risk. In consequence the number of guests was considerably less than it would otherwise have been; nevertheless some 25 or 26 sat down to the wedding breakfast. The ceremony had previously been performed by the Rev Townsend - the bridesmaids being Miss Rhodes, the brides elder sister; Miss Rhodes the daughter of William B Rhodes, Esq of Wellington and the 2 Misses Tylee. Mr Rhodes is one of our oldest settlers, he having selected the Kidnapper Run in 1850 and arrived in 1852 - and the marriage of his daughter was an event of more than common interest. Among the guests were his 2 brothers, WB Rhodes Esq of Wellington, and RH Rhodes Esq of Canterbury. the happy couple left soon after the ceremony for Napier, where they will remain until the departure of the Wellington steamer, by which oppurtunity they will proceed south to join the Panama steamer, en route for England. May happiness attend them both."
