Israel Wood, Jr

Israel was the son of Israel Wood Sr. and Ruth Gould. He was baptized by Rev. Richard Clarke at St. John, New Brunswick, 3 July 1786. He moved with his family to the Long Point Settlement in Upper Canada (Ontario), 1799, settling in Woodhouse Twp., Norfolk Co. He married Jemima Gustin on 29 Jan. 1806.

He was probably the same who served as constable in 1813 (though this was possibly his father). He was a private in Mitchell's Company of the Norfolk Militia, 1814. He was living in Charlotteville Twp., Norfolk Co., in 1823, when his wife signed off on the remainder of her father's lands. Sometime after 1830, he moved to South Norwich Twp., Oxford Co., where he died.

Note: His name is incorrectly listed as "Israel Gerald Wood" in various family trees online. This is probably explained by a modern genealogist misreading I-s-r-a-e-l in cursive as G-e-r-a-l-d at some point, and then the misinformation being copied by others. No records are known to exist suggesting he had a middle name or initial.

Also, the image identified as him posted by the late Tom Hoot seems questionable considering that Israel was in his 70s at the onset of photography. However, this may be a charcoal portrait.
