Came to NZ as a teenager in the 1890's travelling on an Austrian passport....as Yugoslavia was then ruled by Austro_Hungarian Empire.

He was determined to try his luck on the gumfields of Northland.

When the children were young, they ran a boarding house in Dargaville.The family moved to Auckland in 1929.

He managed a stone quarry in Mt Wellington. Most of his workers were Dalmatian.

His daughter Amelia fell in love with one of them and married him.

His daughter became an author and her first book was published when he was dying.

She read it to him on his deathbed.
