The boat to NZ stopped in India, the children were amazed at the skin colour and when someone threw coins into the water the naked children jumped into the water to get it. Then the boat stopped at Sydney, the children saw the Harbour Bridge and panicked because they thought the boat was going to hit the bridge, they huddled together in fear until the boat passed under. Ivka was sea sick all the way to NZ. A Mrs Gerbick looked after the children all the way to NZ; her son was Frank Gerbick who became a member of parliament in Auckland.
Ivka and her husband were very clean and when they did the dishes they boiled the dishwater, there was a different cloth for every purpose & knife for every job they say you could eat off the floor.
Ivka died in Buchanan clinic in Auckland at 91 yrs old. The funeral service was held at St Saviour's church, Kaitia. She was buried at Kaitia public lawn cemetery. She was Baba to her 31 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
