Julia Capa was the beloved mother of Robert Capa and Cornell Capa of photographic and photojournalism fame. Robert lived in Germany in 1931 - 1932 after leaving Hungary for political persecution, then he emigrated to France, and Cornell joined him there after high school. Their older brother died of rheumatic fever in 1935 in Hungary, and their father became ill and died before 1939. The brothers adored their mother, who traveled with Cornell and her sisters, and emigrated to the US in 1939.
Julia Capa was devastated and she never recovered from the early death of her son Robert Capa when he was killed at age 40 in the French Indochina War (Vietnam) on May 24, 1954 by a landmine when he was on an assignment for LIFE Magazine. The United States government offered to bury him in Arlington National Cemetery, a great honor, but Julia Capa deferred, for she knew Robert hated war and what it did to people. She wanted her son to have an eternal rest in a place that was very tranquil. On the gentle slope near the border of the grounds of the cemetery, where the trees and woods abound is a peaceful place for the grave of one who had witnessed much agony and death in his lifetime.
Julia Capa was buried beside Robert when she died in 1961. Cornell Capa's beloved wife Edith "Edie" Schwartz Capa followed in 2001.
Cornell Capa, who achieved his vision of preserving his brother Robert Capa's legacy and memory, and founded an international world class photographic institution for exhibitions, collections and education, was laid to rest beside his beloved wife Edie in May of 2008.
Richard Whelan, noted cultural historian and Capa family biographer died in May 2007 and was laid to rest alongside the Capa family according to his wishes.
Their circle of life was complete.
