Both he and his wife where members of the powerful Sanchez and Duran y Chaves families that were settled on the Atrisco land grant. His wife Efigenia was the granddaughter of Fernando Duran y Chaves ll, the founding member of the Atrisco land grant in 1692.

In the year 1757 Jose Duran y Chaves from El Paso Del Norte appeared before the alacade mayor of the Ville de Alburquerque qnd stated that he had sold land he inherited from his father, Bernando Duran y Chaves, son of Fernando Duran y Chaves ll. The buyer was Jacinto Sanchez, husband of Efigenia Duran y Chaves, grandaughter of Fernando Duran y Chavez ll. As there were no claims on the property, alacade mayor Antionio Baca verified and certified the sale at a price of 550 pesos. After nearly 12 years the land underwent a series of divisions and transactions as it had previously - all within family.
