Jack Hogan was born in Bristol where his father was in barracks and moved around with their new postings (for example, the 1911 census finds him at Bulford Camp, Wiltshire) before being sent to King's School in Rochester.
He joined the Royal Navy and became part of Vice Admiral Holland's staff. They transferred to the Hood on the 12th May 1941 and was an Acting Commander when the ship was sunk by the Bismark on the 24th May 1941.
