JACKSON STEWART: Co D.1st Regiment of Foot Volunteers IN C Inf.,organized in Jan.1848 by Capt. Tilman Blacklock Yancey Co.NC.,called to US. service 02-14-1847 in the Mexican War. Jackson Stewart also served in the Civil War. He was 6'3" and age 50 when he enrolled 05-17-1862. He resigned as 2nd Lt. of Co. B 58th NC Volunteers because of ill health and old age, giving his age as 59 on 04-25-1863. also later the Sheriff of Yancey Co. NC.

PARENTS: Isaiah and Barbara Stewart.

Sheriff Jackson Stewart had seized some horses from the Gouge family to supply the Confederate Army. Members of the Gouge family returned home, tracked down Sheriff Jackson Stewart, over took him. The location of the shooting took place at "Jack's Rock", a large rock near the entrance of upper Cub Creek & Roan Mt. Rd. Sheriff Stewart heard the Gouge boys coming, tried to get his rifle trained on them, but the Gouge boys shot him down.

Sheriff Jackson Stewart was the brother of Frances (Frankie) Stewart Silver.

Frankie killed her drunken husband Charlie Silver,she was tried, convicted of the crime, and hung in Morganton, NC.
