About Jacob M. Grider

At the age of nineteen years, in mid-September 1781, Jacob enlisted for service in the Revolutionary War from Rockingham County. He served in Captain Coger's Company, Col. Andrew Lewis Viginia Regiment, was in the seige at Yorktown, and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. Jacob's company was marched back to Winchester, Virginia, where he was discharged.

In 1785 Jacob married Rebecca Hinton. The fact that this marriage took place, and the enlistment and service of Jacob in the Revolutionary War points out the fact that by this time at least this branch of the family no longer were Mennonites. Records show their membership with a Reformed Brethern church, and later, with Disciples of Christ (Christian) church, which they seem to have adhered to in the ensuing years.

Jacob & Rebecca migrated to Barren County Kentucky where Jacob obtained a parcel of Bounty land on his military service in 1822. From Kentucky the moved on to Putnam County, Indiana about 1828, with some of their children and their families. In 1832 Jaacob applied for a pension on his military service, but this claim was rejected because his term of duty was less than six months. After the death of Rebecca, June 17, 1842, Jacob made his home with one or other of his children, including Tobias who was a minister. He died July 23, 1860, at almost 98 years of age, a great span of years for that era.

Jacob & Rebecca were buried in the Skillman Cemetery, near Fincastle, Indiana, just north of Road 236. Large granite stones were erected to mark their resting places but sometime before 1977 the old tombstones were demolished.

Fortunately, pictures of them had been made before this desecration occured. A new flat military marker was placed on Jacob's grave by the William Knight Chapter, Sons of American Revolution, July 1977. William J. Boatwright, Chap. president, the vice-president, chaplain, and historian, members of the Wasburn Chap. DAR, the president of Putnam County Cemetery Commission, president of the Athey Society of Children of American Revolution, and chairman of the Genealogy Committee of Putnam County and other interested people attended the dedication of the marker. Elmer Carothers, a fourth great-grandson on maternal line, of the Revolutionary War soldier, Jacob Grider, was invited to attend the ceremony, but was unable to be present.

Jacob and Rebecca Grider's names are on a list of members of the Old Mulkey Church in Barren County KY close to the town of Tompkinsville.
