A Jacob Hughes witnessed the will of Arthur Bowdon of Kershaw District, South Carolina in 1812. Presumably the same Jacob Hughes witnessed the will of James Shropshire, also in Kershaw District.

Jacob Hughes is listed in 26-44 category. The William Hughes near him is listed with two men in the 45+ category and one in the 26-44 category. In the next year's census, 1830, they are listed as the same age. Probably William is also 26-44 and the two men in 45+ are his father and father-in-law. There is also E. H. Hughes 16-26 a few names down.

In the 1830 Census, Jacob Hughes and William Hughes are both listed in the 40-50 years old category. With a birth date of 1786, Jacob would have been 44. With a birth date of 1760, William1860 would have been 70, so this William couldn't have been the man previously thought to be Jacob's father. William1860's son William was born in 1813, so it couldn't be him either.

This online family tree shows William who married Hannah de Veaux born in 1782, not 1760. If this is the case, he could indeed be my Jacob's brother and could definitely NOT be his father. TODO: Where did the 1760 birth date come from?
