About Jacob Lackey

GEDCOM Note

LACKEY

A William Lackey's will was filed in Bertie County, North Carolina on September 10, 1776: Wife - Mary, brother - Richard, and children: Richard, Thomas, Jacob, James and Elizabeth. N.C. Hist. & Gen. Reg. V. II pp. 395.

On the Sumter District, South Carolina 1790 census a Jacob Lackey was living alone in Clarendon County. This could possibly be the same Jacob Lackey mentioned in the above paragraph, especially since there is no Jacob Lackey on the North Carolina 1790 census.

On the 1800 census Jacob Lackey was living in Sumter District with his wife, Mary, and four children (two boys, two girls) all under ten years of age. One of the boys must have died before the 1810 census.

On April 4, 1800 Jacob Lackey bought 430 acres of land at the price of twenty pounds and on January 16, 1802 he bought 100 acres for 100 pounds. Both tracts were located in Sumter District.

On January 5, 1815 Jacob Lackey conveyed a deed gift to his wife, Mary, and mentioned his three children but did not give their names. On May 5, 1815 administration papers for Jacob Lackey, deceased, were filed in Sumter County Courthouse naming Mary Lackey, his wife, administrator. Therefore, his death date was between January 5, 1815 & May 5, 1815.

On July 10, 1822 Mary and Thomas Lackey along with William and Sarah Rogers (husband & wife) sold the same 430 and 100 acres mentioned above to Lemeul B. Davis. On March 1, 1831 William Rogers sold a tract of land "whereon I now live, being part of a tract bought by Lemuel B. Davis of Mrs. Lackey and the other heirs of Jacob Lackey and sold by Lemuel Davis to me May 20, 1825 - 211 acres". In 1825 Mary Lackey gave her daughter, Elizabeth McLeod, wife of Norman McLeod 106 acres. From this, we know that the daughter's name was Elizabeth and since the quotation above names Mrs. Lackey and the other heirs of Jacob Lackey, we can assume that Thomas and Sarah were the other two children of Jacob and Mary Lackey. I have studied the census records and compared dates, neighbors, and ages of the children and it confirms my conclusions. In addition, this is the only Lackey family in Sumter County at that time. Mary Lackey died sometime between 1850 and 1860 (wife of Jacob Lackey).
