Source: Independence News-Wave - 22 September 1933 Jacob Pampuch, early settler, passed away at his home in the village on Monday of this week following a short illness. Since the death of his wife last March he had been cared for by his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Pampuch who made their home with him. Deceased was born in Popielow, Germany on 01 May 1848, and died at Independence, Wisconsin on 18 September 1933 at the age of 85 years, four months and 17 days. His wife preceded him in death, having passed away on March 9 of this year. Jacob Pampuch came to this country from Germany with his parents in 1869 when he was 20 years of age. They settled on land which now comprises the village of Independence. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Pampuch who have long since passed on. In November 1873, Jacob was united in marriage to Emily Gosel. They resided here on the farm of his father for a time and then bought the farm in Chimney Rock, now owned by Bert Halama. There they lived for seven years, then moved back to Independence where they resided until 1908 when they moved to Jamestown, North Dakota, which was their home until 1920 - when they again returned to Independence and lived a retired life until death. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Pampuch. Three have passed-on, leaving as the surviving children, Anna, wife of Paul Luial of Jamestown, ND; and John and Lawrence of this village. The deceased children are Mary, who died at the age of six years; another daughter who died in infancy; and Frank who was killed while working in the north woods in 1903. Mr. Pampuch also leaves two brothers and two sisters: Thomas, Independence; Frank, Gallahad, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. Ben Schultz, Dodge, WI; and Mrs. John Woychik, this village. Funeral services were held this forenoon from SS Peter & Paul's Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Kufel officiating.
