About Jacob Phillip Schroeder

Jacob Phillip Schroeder who has been a familiar figure in our city for 29 years, died at his home at 329 E. Lincoln Street at the hour of 9:20 A.M. Saturday, August 29, 1931, age 85 years 9 months and 24 days. For several years the infirmities of old age have curtailed his activities in the coal hauling business in which he engaged. For eight weeks prior to his death he was confined to his home and was cared for by his faithful wife and daughter, Mrs. H. J. Edlich the latter being a professional nurse.

Mr. Schroeder was one of those sturdy Germans, known for his industry, thrift and honest dealings. He was born in Osteffen, Remhessen, Germany, 5 Nov. 1845, his father being William Schroeder. At the age of eight years he came with his parents to America, stopping for a short time in New York, then in Cincinnati, before coming to Waterloo, IL, where they resided for three years, then locating in St. Louis. From there Mr. Schroeder came to Carrolton where he worked at the wagon making business. He was later located at Chapin, and there married Miss Lizzie Chambers of White Hall in 1870. They moved there in Sept. 1902 following a short residence at Merritt, since 1912 Mr. Schroeder had been in the retail coal business in this city and displayed remarkable vigor in doing that work after he reached an advanced age.

Surviving are his wife and three children: Henry Schroeder, St. Mary's, MO, John Schroeder of Tulsa Okla. and Fort Worth, Texas and Bertha, now Mrs. H. J. Edlich, East St. Louis. He also leaves four grandchildren, three children are deceased.

Mr. Schroeder was a lifelong member of he Republican party, always taking a keen interest in the selection of state and national officers.

Friendship, love and truth and a high regard for the welfare of his fellow men controlled his every purpose and every activity in life. To know him was to love him, to transact business with him was an inspiration. To be charitable and do right always dominated by the philosophy that right makes might. His presence made itself felt as a power for good in the community where he lived for so many, many years.

Funeral was conducted in the M.E. Church at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday. Rev. D.L. Jeffers officiating, the I.O.O.F. service being given as the deceased was a member of that order, and also of the M.E. Church. The church choir furnished music. Interment was made in White Hall cemetery.
