BIOGRAPHY: Our information on Henry (Samuel) TETER was originally gathered by his ggggrandson, Walter Miller, as told to him by his maternal grandmother, Etta Editha TETER-Smith. Walter then verified much of the info in his adult life, and expanded our tree. We really appreciate the hard work that Cousin Walter did for us all those years before... Although we are still uncertain of the family's root name...

  SOLDIER: The family has some interesting, but conflicting stories about our Henry (Samuel) TETER or DETER... In the 1880 Federal Census of Windsor Twp in Morgan Co., Ohio Henry Teter Jr said that his father (Henry Samual TETER/DETER) was born in Pennsylvania, but "He had told his sons that he was a Hessian mercinary from Hesse-Cassel or Brandenburg, Prussia, and that he was hired by the Brittish before the Revolutionary War. But after a short while here, Henry TETER/DETER and some of his commrades deserted to go over to the American Army and personally offered his services to George Washington. When the war was over, Henry was detailed to explore the rich Ohio Valley country. Starting out from Philadelphia in early spring, they cut through heavy timber and blazed the trail as they went along. They crossed the Muskingum River near the present town of McConnelsville, Ohio, and went on to the mouth of the Scioto River, to where the town of Kenton, Ohio now stands. The trip took them 6 months, but the underbrush had grown up so quickly behind them that they had to reblaze their trail home. They didn't get back to Philadelphia until late fall. As reward for his service with the Colonial Army and for exploring the vast Ohio Territory, Henry TETER/DETER recieved 1000 acres of land." This was the family farm that he settled, said to be located in Green Co., 20 miles west of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Beecher's or Beech Creek. We do know that Henry married Roseannah and fathered 8 children on their farm in Pennsylvania. After raising their children, these hardy anscestors and other pioneer families including the SWANK's, PICKENPAW's, REX's, DYERS's, SMITH's, and the SHEWSTER's all went west to around Olive Green Creek in Noble Co., Ohio. Later, Henry and Roseannah settled in Manchester Twp. of Morgan Co., Ohio sometime before 1822, where many of their children had relocated ahead of them. In the 1920's one of their great-grandsons, David William TETER of Morgan Co. Ohio (brother of Etta Editha), visited the old family farm in Pennsylvania. "Uncle Dave said the the old brick house and barns were still standing, that there were farm empliments in the upper part of the barns and buckskin mold on the board..."

  DEATH: This is also the Henry TETER or DETER that caused all the confussion for the descendants of the DETER/TETER/TEETER/TEATER Clans of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

  In his final Will of Feb. 20, 1823, Henry played favorites with his two youngest sons. Dr. Henry TETER was 21 years old and his youngest brother, Samuel, was just 18 at the time... "First I bequeath to my younger sons... all that tract of lands that I now own, being to N.E. quarter of Section #3 of Range 10 and township 7 in Morgan Co., (Ohio)." Samuel got the farm and equipment, and together they were to care for their parents until death, then they could split up whatever was left at the time. He left to his older children; George, John, Micheal, David, Catherine, and Margaret, just ONE DOLLAR each! To his grand-daughter, Roseanna Mahon, a 2 year old heifer; and to his loving wife, Roseannah, he left one cow, one saddle, one spinning wheel, one bed and bedding with dresser...

  FUEDING: This Will so enfuriated the older children that some left the family area in Ohio to spread out, and they started spelling the name in different ways... Henry's name of DETER or TETER became TEETER or TEATER with & without the "s", and some of the children cut off communications altogether, like the Micheal TETER family that went west to Scioto and Ross Counties of Ohio..

  LITERATURE: The history of the TETER/DETER family was said to be written up in the 1800's in the Ohio Farm Magazine and History of Ohio...

Note: Jacob Teter went to Van Buren County, Iowa, in 1849 and died there in 1850. His wife, Sarah, came back to Guernsey Co., Ohio, and was still living there in 1879.
