GENEALOGY OF THE YODER FAMILY

Upper Saucon Twsp. Lehigh Co. Pa. by Wesley J. Yoder Jacob b. 10-29-1792 d. 12- 3-1865 During the Revolutionary War, the government of Pennsylvania required all inhabitants of the province to swear allegiance to the colonial government. This was against the religious principles of the Mennonites and the three Yoder brothers, Casper, Jacob, and Abraham along with other Mennonites of the area refused. As punishment, they had all their personal belongings and farm equipment and animals confiscated and sold by the sheriff at public auction. In addition they were imprisoned by the county court at Easton in 1778, and sentenced to banishment from the province. It is uncertain how long their imprisonment lasted, but petitions for their release were made by Eve Yoder and Esther Bachman and perhaps others. What the outcome of these petitions was is not clear, however the men were allowed to return to their farms sometime afterward.
