Jacobus "Koos" Herbst (1968 - 2009)

Brief overview:

Koos (41), was killed on his small holding outside Rustenburg, Northwest on 17th September 2009. He was shot twice in the head.

His son, Henk (16), found Herbst's bloodied body outside the house shortly after 22:00. "I lay down next to him and held his hand and just kept saying, 'Daddy wake up.' But he did not want to wake up,” Henk said emotionally last night.

Herbst was married to Cloete's sister, Petro, who was involved in a car accident about six years ago, in Durban. Herbst was a train driver at the Anglo-Platinum mine. Henk, who with his father and his father's girlfriend, Magda de Beer, who lived here, said he received an SMS from his father at about 20:00 at work, in the Spur in town, asking when Henk comes home.

Around 22:00 he left with his driver who dropped him off at home, and had Henk father texted: "Daddy, I'm already on my way home. I'm just there.”

About 200 m on the dirt road outside their house his driver dropped him off and Henk had his father without success trying to call. He then climbed over the gate and entered the house to get his father into his bedroom as usual. However, he could not find his father, he said. He looked out the back door and saw a flashlight shining against the fence outside the house, but no got answer when he did not call. "When I walked out, I saw my father lying on the ground on the back of the wall, with blood all over his face. "I suspect he heard something outside and when he shot over the wall with the flash to see what "They shot him," said Henk.

Their neighbour, Mr. Deon van der Westhuizen, arrived on the scene shortly afterwards. He has for Henk said he had heard two shots go off minutes before. "I probably missed it by a few minutes," said Henk.

Nothing is missing from the house and the family's two American fighting dogs on the yard were also intact. Herbst was in the news in 2005 when he was charged with, among other things, attempted murder after he allegation with a shotgun on Cloete's estranged husband, mr. Andries Cloete, shot. The incident apparently took place at the home of Mrs. Ansie Kroucamp, Herbst's former partner.
