Jackie graduated from Hunter High School and Bryn Mawr College, where she majored in math and physics. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Paris after her college graduation.
In 1957, after returning to the U.S., she received a master's degree in math at Cornell and married Joseph Shalhevet-- an Israeli graduate student getting a PhD in soil science. In Israel, she taught math and was a research assistant in the Applied Mathematics department of the Chaim Weizmann Institute. In 1968 she began studying for a PhD in math at Hebrew University while working at a teaching and research position at Bar Ilan University.
After her death at age 37, her last paper -- on game theory --was published posthumously in the Journal of Combinatorial Theory.
