Henle in 1809 as the son of a prominent Jewish family in Fürth born, his uncle was Elkan Henle . Because of the lack of development opportunities for Jewish children in Bavaria , the family moved into the Rhineland. Jakob Henle studied in Bonn and Heidelberg medicine.
After graduation in 1832 he became assistant and prosector at the Institute of Johannes Müller in Berlin . 1840 Henle was a professor of anatomy and physiology at the University of Zurich appointed. He held there a lecture on histology. He was considered a master of the microscope and brought the young science of histology major progress.
1844 was followed by the appointment at the University of Heidelberg on the second ordinary chair of anatomy and physiology. It was here that his Handbook of rational pathology , where he held 1848 that famous anthropological College which one of his listeners, the Swiss poet Gottfried Keller , so very impressed that he in his novel Green Henry described. The amendment Regine Keller sat also the first wife of Henle, Elise Egloff , a literary monument.
Henle took over 1852, the head of the Institute of Anatomy, University of Göttingen . Lived there, he worked and taught until his death in 1885. In 1855 he published his famous manual of systematic human anatomy . In 1858 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina selected.

Henle coined the terms contagium vivum or contagium animatum and thus the theory of microorganisms as the cause of infectious diseases. Accordingly, the basic rules of the definition of a pathogen, the Koch's postulates , according to him and his student Robert Koch named.
A commemorative plaque was installed before 1888 his former apartment building in Göttingen and was built in 1942 in the Nazi era away again for being Jewish. After the war, the plaque was reinstalled [1] . Also at the birthplace of Henle in the Helmstraße 9 there is a plaque in Fürth. The Anatomical Institute of Heidelberg honors Henle with a bust on the first floor of the dissection. The medical faculty of the University of Göttingen gives it annually to honor the Jacob Henle medal . A medical center in Lünen is called Jacob Henle house .
