About James Armitage, of Farnley Hall, Leeds
brief biography
James Armitage (1730-1803) was a wealthy wool merchant Leeds - amassing his fortune in the 18th Century. He lived most of his life in Hunslet. He was in partnership with Neriah and Joseph Gomersall. He acquired Farnley Hall south west of Leeds (not to be confused with Farnley Hall near Otley), in 1799 - the price £49,500 - from Sir Thomas Danby.
His son Edward (1764-1829) succeeded James in 1803. He improved the building and moved in in 1806, subsequently landscaping the grounds.
Edward withdrew from the partnership with Neriah and Joseph Gomersall in 1804 and concentrated on farming.
