Extract from "A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland: Vol. I" by Sir Bernard Burke (1879) Lineage: James Ashe, Esq. of Westcombe, Somerset (whose ancestry is deatiled in Burke's Extinct Baronetage), sat in several Parliaments during the reigns of James I and Charles I; he married and had five sons: - John, his heir, of Westcombe, ancestors of the Ashes of Ashgrove, co. Tipperary; - Edward, of Heytesbury, from whom the Ashes of that place, the representative of whom, William Ashe, Esq., of Heytesbury, married Anne, daughter of Alexander Popham, Esq., of Littlecote, and had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married, 1705, Pierce A'Court, Esq., M.P. for Heytesbury, and was great-grandmother of William, 1st Lord Heytesbury; - Joseph, of Twickenham, created a Baronet in 1660; - Jonathan, of London, who left an only daughter, Rebecca, who married Sir Francis Vincent, M.P. for Surrey; - Samuel.

Extract from "A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, enjoying Territorial Possessions or High Official Rank, but uninvested with with Heritable Honours: Vol. II" by John Burke (1835) James Ashe, of Freshford in Somerset, the son and successor of John Ashe, of Westcombe, married Grace, daughter of Richard Pitt, Esq. of Melcombe Regis, and had, with two daughters, five sons, viz. 1. John, of Freshford. 2. Edward of London, M.P. for Heytesbury, 16th Charles I, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Christopher Woodward, Esq, and had a son and heir, William Ashe, of Heytesbury. 3. Joseph of Twickenham, created a Baronet in 1660, in consideration of loyal services rendered to the Crown. 4. Jonathan, a merchant in London. 5. Samuel, of Langley Burrell, Wilts, ancestors of the Ashes of that place.

Brewham Wills: James Ashe, of Westcombe in Batcombe, 16 November 1642, proved 6 May 1646. Poor of Brewham. Lands in Stovord.

To my parish church at Batcombe, £16 for a silver Flagon for the Communion Table. To the poor at Batcombe, £5, & of Brewham, 40/-. Leases, etc. in Westcombe to my wife Grace, then to John Ashe, my son, remainder to Edward & Jonathan, my sons. My daughter, Alice, wife of Mr. Edward Harris. To my son Edward £100, & to Joseph Ashe, my 3rd son, £500, the £500 which they both owe me to be forgiven. To my 4th son, Jonathan Ashe, £1,000.

Extract from "Notes and Queries for Somerset and Dorset: Vol. III" by Frederick William Weaver and Charles Herbert Mayo (1893) James Ashe: The James Ashe who signed the Visitation of Somerset, 1623, died May 5th, 1626, and was buried in South Petherton Church. The following table will show his relationship to James of Fifield. James Ashe, of South Petherton, ob. 1615, married Ann, daughter of John Walrond of Bovy, Devon, and had issue: (1) John, who married Anne, daughter of Thomas Strode of Shepton Malet, who had issue: (a) James of Freshford, who married Grace, daughter of Richard Pitt of Melcombe Regis, who had issue: (i) John of Freshford, M.P., who married Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Davison, who had issue: - James of Fifield. (2) William, who married Mary, daughter of ____ Ford, Devon, who had issue: (a) James of South Petherton, ob. 5 May 1626 (The Signator), who married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of John Martyn, of Exeter.
