About James Peter Auriol
James (maybe Jacques) Auriol was born at Castres in the South-West of France. He was the member of a prominent Huguenot family which may have been suffering from discrimination. He left France for Lisbon, possibly to stay with his uncle. There he met his English wife. They started a family before moving to London where James established himself as a merchant, and founded the English branch of the Auriol family. Most if not all of his children set off to Bengal in the 1770's to make their fame and fortune. James' daughter Sophia married John Prinsep and established the Prinsep dynasty in Bengal. John Prinsep pioneered the indigo textile dying trade and made a fortune before returning to England where he became the MP for Queensborough in 1802 . John and Sophie Prinsep had many children including William who sired the branch from which Stephen and Janet Rae descend - Auriol-Prinsep-Sperling-Gould-Rae.
Thus the name Auriol has appeared in at least every other generation either as a forename or surname and can be traced back until at least the late 1600's
