About James W. Barnes
Parents Solon & Rebecca were farmers, who moved from Ohio to Iowa shortly after James was born. In 1875 James moved to Milton Twp, Antrim County, MI. Then in 1877 he homesteaded a claim to 40 acres in Echo Tep. James was a staunch Republican and was elected to several offices. He served as township clerk for 24 years. He was a member of the school board. He was a member of the Freemasons, Orange Lodge. He and his wife Elizabeth were Seventh Day Adventists. They raised from a young age Edith Elizabeth Sanford, the orphaned daughter of Daniel Sanford & Barbara Woodside; they were both born in Canada.
