About James E. Bowman, M.D.
James Edward Bowman, MD, FASCP, FCAP (February 5, 1923 – September 28, 2011) was an American physician who was internationally renowned as a specialist in pathology, hematology, and genetics. He was a professor of pathology and genetics at the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Dr. Bowman died of cancer on September 28, 2011, at the University of Chicago Medical Center, at the age of 88.
"In 1943, Dr. Bowman earned a bachelor’s degree from Howard University, the same college where he completed medical school. After his discharge from the Army in 1946, he came to St. Luke’s. When he was informed he must enter through the back doors, he refused and went in the front way, his daughter said. The next day, African-American nurses and other black staff were waiting to walk in with Dr. Bowman."
