About James Breeden

GEDCOM Note

A marriage record is given in Shenandoah County, VA for February 25, 1784 between James Breeding (Breeden) and Hannah Naling. Other records seem to indicate that Naling was a misspelled surname and the Bride was Hannah Newland/Newlun of Shenandoah County, VA. On 10 May 1785, Daniel Newland Sr. deeded 130 acres (half) of the 260 acre tract that he bought from the proprietors on 1 May 1763 on the North River in Shenandoah County, VA to James Breeding and Hanna (sic) his wife (for love). Hanna is undoubtedly Hannah Newland and was probably the daughter of Daniel Newland Sr. -- Shenandoah County, Deed book E., p. 270. A second Deed is recorded 27 September 1786 where Daniel Newland the elder, James Breeding Jr. and Hannah his wife jointly sold William Smith the entire 260 acre tract for 70 Pounds. -- Shenandoah County, Deed Book F., p 188. I interpret this to mean that half of the North River tract was given to Hannah and James Breeding Jr. Then they jointly sold the full 260 acres to William Smith in September 1786. The above establishes that James and Hannah were living in Shenandoah County, VA until after 27 September 1786 The Breeden's then moved to Washington County, TN where their oldest son, William, was born in 1789. Sometime between the birth of their second son, John (1794) and the birth of Bryant (1800) they moved to Sevier County, TN where they remained the rest of their lives. Hannah was still alive and listed in the household of Joseph Webb in the 1850 Sevier County, TN Census. James died before 1830 and their burial site is not known. They may have had children other than the ones listed. William, John and Bryant are all listed in the 1850 Sevier County, TN Census.
