Some records which may pertain to this James Cannon:
JOHNSTON Co., 1754 [Dobbs] A True List of Capt. Frans. Mackelwain’s (McIlwain?) Company (list includes a Jas. Cannon) http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ADAIR/2002-11/1038169943
Dobbs County Militia Rolls, 1767-1781 From: North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh, NC. List of Capt. John Sherrard's Company, 1 Oct., 1767 (list includes James Cannon) http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/dobbs/military/dobmilit.txt
See land records here: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/dobbs/court/dobsett.txt
The 1780 Dobbs Co. census includes John Cannon and James Cannon, Sr. in District #8, Davis. Possibly this James (and perhaps his father John, if he was still living, although the presence of a John Cannon in the 1790 census argues against his being John, father of James). District # 8 DAVIS, Greene County - West of Great Contentnea Creek in northern Greene County and adjacent to Wayne County. http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncstate/historical/DobbsCo/files/census-1780... http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/lenoir/taxlists/1780tax.txt
The 1790 New Bern District, Dobbs Co. census includes John Cannon, James Cannon Sr., and James Cannon Jr. http://genealogytrails.com/ncar/dobbs/cen_1790_headsoffamilies.html
1793 Voter List for Glasgow NC (later Greene) included two James Cannons. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DANIEL/2004-05/108456...
If you can positively identify these Cannons, I would love to hear from you.
