James Bartley Click, Sr.

James Bartley Click, Sr. was born in Scott County, Virginia. He was the son of John Click Sr and Susan Drake. He died on 1 March 1898 in Floyd County, Kentucky, He was buried at Click Cemetery, Finance Hollow, Floyd County, Kentucky. He married Jane Salmons, daughter of Rowland Salmons and Frankie Carter, on 12 May 1822 in Floyd County, Kentucky.

He was definitely a centenarian, however, his exact age at death is unclear. He self-reported different ages on different census documents, as outlined below. Many Click family researchers accept December 10, 1793, as his date of birth but it could have been as early as 1790.

He appeared on the census of 1840 at Floyd County, Kentucky, listed as James Click with 1 male under 5, 2 males 5 & under 10, 2 males 10 & under 15, 1 male 50 & under 60, 2 females under 5, 1 female 10 & under 15, 1 female 30 & under 40. He appeared on the census of 5 August 1850 at Floyd County, Kentucky, listed as James age 50 head of house. He appeared on the census of 16 August 1860 at Floyd County, Kentucky, listed as James Sr. age 64 head of house. He appeared on the census of 27 July 1870 at Floyd County, Kentucky, listed as James age 74 head of house. He appeared on the census of 8 June 1880 at Floyd County, Kentucky, listed as James Sr. age 85, farmer, head of house.

James Click appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper in November 1896, along with a letter from William Jennings Bryan to James Click thanking him for riding his mule 6 miles to vote for him in the presidential election. The article listed James a being 106 years old. Some sources list his birth as 10 Dec 1790.
