From his obituary in the Chickasha (OK) Daily Express of Friday, April 19, 1918:
James Cowan, of Wichita, Kansas, died at his home yesterday morning, and was buried today in Bowie, Texas, where he formerly lived. Mr. Cowan lived in Chickasha at one time and will be remembered by many old friends. He is survived by one sister in this city, Mrs. R. Stevens, who was accompanied to Bowie by Mrs. Oscar Vaughan
