James Ephinstone, Lord Coupar

Biographical Summary

"By charter under the Great Seal, dated 20 December 1607, King James VI erected the lands and baronies of the Cistercian Abbey of Coupar-Angus into a temporal lordship in favour of his godson, the Hon. James Elphinstone, younger son of the first Lord Balmerino, with the title of a lord in Parliament, by the style of Lord Coupar. His lordship was appointed an Extraordinary Lord of Session 7 June 1649, in the room of his brother, the second Lord Balmerino, deceased...

...His lordship married first, Margaret, daughter of Sir James Halyburton of Pitcur; second, contract 11 October 1666, Marion Oglivy, eldest daughter of James, second Earl of Airlie. She married, after the death of her first husband, John, third Lord Lindores. Lord Coupar dying in 1669 without issue, his title and estates devolved upon his nephew, John, third Lord Balmerino, and his dscendants, in terms of the patent an entails."
