About James Ernest Eugene Eubank

James Ernest Eugene Eubank was the third child born to James Gideon Philo Eubank and his wife Mary Jane Harris Eubank, June 18, 1882, in Caldwell, Sumner County, Kansas. Their family moved from Kansas to Washington State in about 1888. James was also listed as Eugene James Ernest Eubank in several of the public records I found for him. An 1892 Washington State Census record showed him as Ernest Eubank, and he was living in Pierce County, with his parents and siblings, listed as follows: J.G. 38, Mary, 38, Olive, 17, Kate, 15, Ernest, 9, and Grace, 8 years old. His father, James, was working as a carpenter. J.G. Eubank was born in Illinois, Mary in Indiana, Olive and Lucetta in Iowa, and Ernest and Grace in Kansas.

In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Lake City, Pierce, Washington, Eugene, 17, was living with his parents and younger sister Grace P., 16. At the time, James Gideon and Mary had been married 27 years and had given birth to four children. Their two oldest daughters, Olive and Lucetta or Kate, were no longer living at home, since they had already been married. James Gideon was still working as a carpenter and they owned their home free of a mortgage.

James Eugene Ernest Eubank married Della L. Watson September 19, 1906, in Pierce County, Washington. She was born September 16, 1885, in El Dorado, Kansas. Her parents were James W. Watson, and Ida Florence Billups Watson. In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Della was 14 years old and living in Geulph, Sumner, Kansas, with her parents and siblings Milla May, 12, Iris Faye., 9, Ione F., 5 and Ruth W., 1 year old.

In the 1910 census for Dupont, Pierce, Washington, James, 27, was living with his wife, Della, 24, and their children, Arthur Watson, 2, and James V., 3 months old. James was working as a farmer. They owned their own farm free from a mortgage. In a 1912 U.S. City Directory Listing, James and Della were living at 5401 South 54th Street and he was working as a blacksmith. His father, James G.P. Eubank and mother, Mary J. Eubank, were living at 414 S. 59th Street, and he was working as a carpenter.

Per a 1913 U.S. City Directory listing J. Eugene Eubank was living at 3020 S. 54th Street in Tacoma, Washington, with his wife Della, and he was working as a blacksmith. His parents. James Gideon and Mary J. Eubank, were still living at 414 S. 59th Street, and was still working as a carpenter.

Per his World War I draft registration card completed on September 1, 1918, James Ernest Eugene Eubank, 26, was born June 18, 1882, in Caldwell, Kansas, and was living in Elessa, Grays Harbor, Washington. His wife was listed as Della L. Eubank. He described himself as being of medium height and build with brown eyes and hair and was working as a farmer.

In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census for Elma, Grays Harbor, Washington, James, 36, and Della, 34, were renting a home with their two sons, Arthur, 12, and James, 9. James was working as a truck driver for a grocery store. Della's father, James Watson, owned a grocery store, so James was probably working for his father-in-law.

James and Della were divorced sometime between 1920 and 1925, and he married Caroline Jones on October 23, 1929, in Grays Harbor County, Washington. She was Caroline Mary Darby Jones, born January 17, 1889, in Washington state. Caroline was the daughter of William Franklin Darby born in Texas in 1865 and probably Caroline Margaret Dillard born in 1873, who may have died in childbirth with Caroline in 1889. Caroline had previously been married to John "Jack" Austin Jones, and they had 2 children, Zella Faye and Homer William Jones. Della Lee Watson married Irvin William Urquhart in 1925 in Tacoma, Washington. She passed away in 1939 and Irv then married Anna Marie Rupprecht September 20, 1941, in Tacoma.

By the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, Washington, James, 46, and Caroline, 40, were living with Caroline's two children from a previous marriage to John "Jack" Austin Jones, Zella Faye Jones, 15, and Homer William Jones, 13. James was listed as a lunch counter operator and Caroline as his partner in the lunch counter business.

In the 1930 U.S. Census for Tacoma, Washington, Della, 44, and her second husband, Irvin W. Urquhart, 47, were living with Della's sister, Ruth Stacy, 31, and her son Harold Max Stacy, 10. Irvin was working as a logger at a logging camp and Ruth was working as a salesperson in a grocery store, probably the one owned by her father, James Watson. Per a 1935 U.S. City Directory listing for Tacoma, Della and Irvin Urquhart were living at 5524 S. Puget Sound Avenue, and he was working as a laborer.

In the 1940 U.S. Federal Census James was living on Old Montesano Highway in Junction City, Grays Harbor, Washington, in a home he was renting for $15.00 per month. He was working as a caretaker for the water department. He had an 8th grade education. For the 52 weeks he worked at 70 hours per week in 1939, he earned an income of $1,176. They were listed in the census as: James, 57, Carolyn, 52, Homer W. Jones, 23, and also living with them was Pearl R. Balderston, 7, their granddaughter. She was the daughter of Carolyn's daughter Zella Faye Jones and her first husband Eldred Eli Balderston. Homer was working as a cook in a sandwich shop. For the 48 weeks he worked at that job at 48 hours per week, Homer earned $1,100. They were all living at the same location in 1935.

Per his World War II draft registration card in 1942, he was listed as James Ernest Eugene Eubank, born June 18, 1882, in Caldwell, Kansas, living at Route 1, Box 270, Montesano, Washington, and at the time he completed the draft card he was 59 years old. His wife was listed as Caroline Eubank.

James Ernest Eugene Eubank passed away in March of 1966 while he was living in Montesano, Grays Harbor County, Washington, and was buried in the Mountain View Memorial Park, Lakewood, Pierce County, Washington. His wife, Caroline, passed away just 6 years later in 1971 while living in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington, and she was buried in the Mountain View Memorial Park Cemetery with her husband.

James and Della's son Arthur Watson Eubank passed away in 1969 and James V. Eubank in 1970. His wife, Opal May Tucker Rainey Eubank, lived another 25 years and passed away in 1995 at the age of 84 years old. James V. and Opal May had one adopted daughter, but I don't know if his brother Arthur was ever married or had children. Arthur and James V. Eubank were my second cousins.
