FROM IRELAND TO AMERICA

Most of what is available about the background of the Gilliland family is furnished in the book "Genealogy of the McMillen and Gilliland Families by Alonzo B. McMillen. Some of the following was from that book

The Gilliland family was of Scotch-Irish descent, with their homestead in the County Down, in the north of Ireland. In Scotland the Gillilands had been a Sept of the small clan of Maclelland of Ayrshire.

These Gilliland's had eleven children in their family, seven sons and four daughters. The names of the sons were: John, Thomas, Hugh, Adam, Andrew, Robert and James. The four daughters were: Jane, Mary, Sarah and Catherine (not in order of birth).

The three oldest brothers emigrated to America to look over the situation - the rest were to follow. Later when the rest were on board the ship ready to sail, as the signal was given to take in the gangplank, Catherine ran ashore so she could join her Catholic lover, and later they were married. The feelings at that time were so high between Catholics and Protestants that her name was not mentioned in their family for many years.

GILLILANDS IN AMERICA

EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA:

The Gilliland family originally settled at Faggis in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Although we know the names of the children, we don't know the parents names nor whether or not they came to America, but we should assume that they did.

Tax statements, census's, and the county histories show that a John Gilliland, b. cal710 - 1715, Ireland, moved from Chester County to York County, and married a Jane , and died there in 1789.

JAMES ADAM & MARGARET FRANCIS GILLILAND
   July 04, 1736
   West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania
   PENNSYLVANIA (Chester County)

The following notes for James Adam Gilliland and his family were taken from the book

"Genealogy of the McMillen and Gilliland Families" by Alonzo B. McMillen and the

Cowden/Gilliland book.

James Gilliland is first known of in the United States as at Fagg’s Manor, Chester Co.,

Pennsylvania, where a re-survey of the manor shows the northwest corner to have been

settled by John Dickey, James Gilliland and Moses Thompson. Fagg’s Manor

Presbyterian Church was organized in 1730. James Gilliland was closely associated with

this church and may have been there at that time. This James Gilliland appears in Chester

Co., records in 1749 as a witness to the will of John Thompson. He is mentioned in the

history of Fagg’s manor Presbyterian Church as one the leading men of his time. On June

15, 1758, he was a trustee of the bond of the church. His wife’s name was Margaret, who

died in 1739, most likely from complication of the birth of her child, James Gilliland. He

died in October, 1795. His occupation was a gunsmith.

Other children of James Adam and Margaret Francis (Burr) Gilliland were, Alexander

James, born, November 18, 1737, and Thomas Sharp, born 1738.

There is not a lot of information for their son, Thomas Sharp, only that he married Anne,

last name unknown in 1760 and had 2 sons, William and Hugh. He died in 1800 in the

state of Georgia.

Their other son, Alexander James was to say the least quite a character! He was born on

November 18, 1737 and married Frances Elizabeth Baird, the daughter of John Baird,

November 18, 1766 in Gastonia, North Carolina. Apparently he was very wealthy, he was

also married three times, divorcing his second wife, Rebecca McCullough and had scads

of children. His son, James was a Presbyterian minister who was anti-slavery and

anti-drinking. Alexander on the other hand owned slaves and drinking was one of his

pastimes. James baptized Alexander on his death bed. (For other info and tales of

Alexander, see the Gilliland Characters section.)

James Adam died October 18, 1795 in Fagg’s Manor, Cochransville, Chester Co.,

Pennsylvania.
