Biography

James Glendinning was baptized on 17 Dec 1738 in Waulkmill, Westerkirk, Dumfries. He was 13 when his father died. He married Isabel Beattie on 1 May 1762 in Westerkirk when he was 24. They had 8 children including their third, Mary, who was our ancestor.

James was a tenant farmer grazing sheep as his father and grandfather had.

In 1755, the population of Westerkirk was 549 souls. In 1793, the population had increased to 655. In 1801, the population was 638. During 1791-99, “there were 2 shopkeepers, 1 miller, 1 baker, 1 cooper, 2 shoemakers, 8 tailors, 3 smiths, 7 carpenters, and 13 weavers. Journeyman and apprentices are included in this list. All found sufficient employment dealing with the inhabitants except for the weavers who sometimes made cloth for people not living in the parish.

On average, there were 17 baptisms, 5 marriages and 11 deaths each year.

There were 27 farms. The rent of one farm was between 400 l. and 500 l; nine farms were between 100 l. and 200 l.; and all the others were under 100 l. The principle crops were oats, barley, peas, potatoes, turnips, sown grass.

The parish maintained 17,480 sheep and they were of the long or white faced now known under the name of the Cheviot Breed. They sold lambs in the spring keeping the best. They also shaved the sheep and sold the fleece. Eight fleeces usually made a stone.

The inhabitants of Westerkirk were known for their decency. They were religious without superstition; charitable without ostentation; and temperate almost without exception. The poor were never been reduced to begging bread. The number of poor on the roll was 18. Everyone in the parish contributed to the rent and clothing of the paupers.

In 1750, the parish had more wood than in 1799. However, there was still quite an amount of natural wood along the banks of the Esk and several thriving plantations. There were hares, rabbits and some foxes in the parish. There are fewer partridges than before. Peat was the only fuel used in the past but by 1799 everyone was using coal as well.”

An advertisement in a Dumfries newspaper for a farm at Glendinning where James was working in 1809 read: "Farms to Let on the Johnstone of Westerhall Estate No 17 Glendinning, presently possessed by James Borthwick and James Glendinning. 86 acres arable, 5007 acres pasture, 5163 acres total."

James Glendinning’s gravestone in Westerkirk Churchyard reads: "In memory of James Glendinning tenant in Glendinning who died January 9th 1810 aged 70 years. And Isabel Beattie his wife who died at Locherben September 25th 1816 aged 79 years. And Archibald Glendinning tenant in Over Cassock their eldest son who died January 20th 1827 aged 60 years. Also Mary Park his wife who died at Overcassock 4th October 1842 aged 76 years. Also William Glendinning their third son whose remains rest in York where he died 24th September 1836 aged 33 years. Also of James Glendinning tenant in Overcassock who died there 3 day of November 1867 aged 67 years."
