    • ****************************************************** HARNER, James Monroe was born about 1833 in Reading or Tulpehocken, Berks County, Pennsylvania, the son of Isaac and Eliza Harner. He married Mary Wilson and from this union they had three children, James Monroe Jr. (Katherine S.), Luella (George S. Hipes) and Ida May (John Q. Watkins). He was a saloon keeper, billiard hall proprietor, photographer, tobacco and cigar store proprietor and barber while living in Naperville. He moved with his family to Kansas City, Missouri in 1868 and was employed as a barber there. In 1871 he was elected as an alderman in Kansas City. He died June 30, 1874 in Kansas City, Missouri when he fell from the horse he was riding and struck his head. He was buried in the Mount Washington Cemetery, Independence, Jackson County, Missouri.
