About James W Hawkins
James William Hawkins, son of Alexander (2) and Betsy Justus, was born Mrch 1844 in Schuyler Co. Ill. He died on July 9, 1903 in Sprindale, Stevens co. WA. He married Martha McKinney on Sept. 12, 1867 at Schuyler Co., IL. Martha was the daughter of John McKinney and his wife Jane. Martha was born in Pennsylvania and died on April 22, 1876 in Kansas. They had children Oliver, Emmaletta and John A.
James W. enlisted at age 18 at Irvin Il on Aug 12, 1862 in Illinois Volunteers under Col Kinney in Capt Stack's company. He served his country for three years and mustered out at Mobile Al. After his discharge, he was a farmer for a while before moving to Shawneewtown, Kansas where he remained for five years. He was a mailman in ILL when he returned to that state. After his wife died his daughter Emmaletta took charge of household duties beginning at age eleven. John his younger son moved "out west" to Washington State where he was soon followed by James.
