Bogus Genealogy

According to Sir James Balfour Paul, writing in his account of the family of Alexander, Earl of Stirling, James Hay, here treated, was the father of Grizel Hay lady who married, as his second wife, Lt-Col. Hon. James Alexander The Scots Peerage VIII: 180 This is wrong. Grizel Hay was in fact the daughter of Sir William Hay of Linplum This is confirmed by her contract of marriage with Lt-Col. Hon. James Alexander NRS: GD1/189/6

The Question of Identity

James Hay, here treated, is reported to be the son of George Hay, 2nd Earl of Kinnoull and his wife Anne Douglas According to the Scots Peerage his name is mentioned in an Aberdeen sasine, date not given, but nothing more is said of him. The Scots Peerage V: 224
