The fire of March, 1854, at Port Huron, was su pposed to result from the pr
osecution of the whisky sellers. The losses, as n early as we have been ab
le to ascertain, are as follows: J.H. Haslett, $500, total loss.

The corner-stone of the County Cou rt House was duly placed October 30, 187
2. '85'85
The corner-stone of the new bu ilding was laid at the northeast corner. Und
er it was a square cavity in theb rick work, prepared for the recepti
on of the box containing the papers and ot her documents deposited. '85'85'85.
The following is a list of papers and other arti cles deposited in the corn

James H. HASLETT, merchant tailor, is a native of Washington County, Penn
., a nd was born November 1, 1825. His parents removed to Richland Count
y, Ohio, i n 1832, where he lived until eighteen years of age; then we
nt to Columbus,rem ained there about two years and finished learning his t
rade; then came toMich igan and located at Port Huron. Arriving here Octob
er 10, 1845, he and Mr. A. J. DEWEY, of Columbus, Ohio, opened a shopher
e, and since then, for the pas t thirty-seven years, Mr. HASLETT has carri
ed on the business of merchant tai lor in this place, and for twenty-nine y
ears has occupied his present locatio n. He is the oldest business man, wi
th one exception, in Port Huron, andhas c arried on the business of mercha
nt tailoring longer than any one man inthe St ate. pg. 574 Port Huron

ort Huron, which he operated for 29 years with a partner, sometimes in h
is life he became interested in spiritualism, when he was about 58 heboug
ht property at Pine lake - Ingham Co. - Meridian Township in the Villa
ge of Namoka and added "The Pine Lake House and its property on the nor
th shore, th is was given tot he cause of spiritualism, and was a summer ca
mping grounds f or those interested. It became known as the Haslett Park c
onsisted of 20 acr es. He had many ambitious plans for his park - totea
ch spiritualism- a medi um's home - school for children - library - class
