About James Henry Garward


JAMES GARWARD the son of WILLIAM GARWOOD and his wife ANN (nee PAGE) of Norton Heath, Essex. He was baptised at Norton Mandevilel in Essex on 1 April 1821 by Reverend JOHN CHAMBERLAYNE, curate.

On 28 June 1845 at the Parish Church of St John’s, Hackney after Banns, JAMES GARWARD, of full age, bachelor, smith, of Lea Bridge Road, Hackney, son of WILLIAM GARWARD, brewer, married ELIZABETH GIBBARD, of full age, a spinster of no occupation, of the same address, daughter of WILLIAM GIBBARD, Post Office Messenger. Witnesses were WILLIAM GIBBARD and MARY ANN KNOTT. ELIZABETH was baptised at Leyton on 4 June 1820, the daughter of WILLIAM GIBBARD and his wife ELIZABETH (who was born at Risbrook in Suffolk in 1790). WILLIAM GIBBARD was born at Norton in Northamptonshire in 1782-4. He was variously described as a labourer, gardener, Post Office messenger and domestic servant. He died on 4 February 1860 at Leyton aged 76, the cause of death being “natural decay”. The informant of the death was SARAH PAGE (nee GARWARD, - his sister), who was in attendance at the death. His wife ELIZABETH GIBBARD died later the same year on 31 July 1860, at Leyton, aged 69, the cause of death being erysepilus. The informant of the death was MARY WHEATTON, who could only make her mark, who was in attendance.

JAMES and ELIZABETH GARWARD had issue: 1. JAMES HENRY GARWARD, who was born in Leyton in the September Quarter 1846 and died there in 1896. See Page H – 1. 2. WILLIAM GEORGE GARWARD, who was born in Leyton on 10 April 1848. A blacksmith, he married and had a family, and emigrated to Canada in 1881. . See Page H – 11. 3. ELIZABETH ANN GARWARD, who was born in Leyton in about 1849 and was buried at St Mary’s, Leyton on 23 September 1860, a child aged 11 years 4. ANNIE MARY GARWARD, who was born in Leyton in about 1851. She was married in the June Quarter of 1877 to HERBERT CHAPMAN, a nurseryman’s clerk. She died in the 3d quarter of 1878. 5. ARTHUR JOHN GARWARD, who was born in Leyton on 24 December 1853. A farrier and gas inspector, he married and had a family, and died at Ilford on 1914. See Page H - 21 6. HERBERT CHARLES GARWARD, who was born in Leyton on 19 October 1855 [ Ref: West Ham 4a 34]. He was a whitesmith and gas fitter. See Page H - 31 7. FRANK EDWARD GARWARD, who was born in Leyton in early 1858. He was buried at St Mary’s, Leyton on 22 September 1864, a child aged 6 years 8. ALBERT DAVID GARWARD, who was born in Leyton in 1859. He was buried at St Mary’s, Leyton on 30 December 1860, a child aged 18 months. 9. STEPHEN FREDERICK GARWARD, who was born in the September Quarter 1862. A blacksmith by trade. He was living with his parents in the 1881 census. His death, aged 20, is recorded at the General Register Office in the December Quarter 1882 in the West Ham area [Ref: 4a 83]. A newspaper report dated 18 November 1882 reads: “A Fireman’s funeral on Saturday. The remains of Mr Frederick Garward, a member of the Leyton and Leytonstone Volunteer Fire Brigade, died previous Monday after an illness of a few days through cold, were buried in the Old Churchyard.”

JAMES GARWARD was described variously as a Master Blacksmith, whitesmith, farrier, engineer, gas fitter and bell-hanger. He died at 11 Grange Road, Leyton on 9 November 1895, aged 75, a retired Blacksmith Master. The cause of death was Cerebral Apoplexy. The informant of the death was JAMES GARWARD, his son, of 43 Grange Road, Leyton, who was present at the death. His death (aged 75) is recorded at the General Register Office in the December Quarter 1895 in the West Ham area [Ref: 4a 137].

ELIZABETH GARWARD died at 16, Chandos Road, Stratford in London on 3 June 1891, aged 71, the wife of JAMES GARWARD, gas fitter. The cause of death was shown as Bronchitis Emphysema. The informant of the death was S Garward, daughter-in-law, of 69 Henniker Road, Stratford, who was present at the death. Her death (aged 71) is recorded at the General Register Office in the June Quarter 1891 in the West Ham area [Ref: 4a 19].
