James Sherwood Higgs was born 1870 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC, the eldest of 8 known surviving children (4 boys/4 girls) born to merchant and CSA veteran James Allen Higgs and his wife, Martha "Pattie" Washington Sherwood.
He was the paternal grandson of Jacob Higgs Jr & Adeline Frances Pittman and gr-grandson of Jacob Higgs Jr & Judith/Judath Harrell, all of Halifax County, NC. He was a direct descendant of John & Elinor Higgs who sold their land in Surry Co, VA in 1693 and removed to Bertie County, NC. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson Bailor Richardson Sherwood Jr. & Martha Thomas Ellington, originally from Virginia, who removed to NC and was a tailor in Raleigh.
Sherwood married Lucy Clark Hawkins in 1895, the daughter of Dr. William Joseph Hawkins and Mary White of Franklin County. She was a direct descendant of the famed Philomen Hawkins III & Lucy Davis of Warren County. The couple resided in Raleigh where Sherwood founded "Sherwood Higgs & Company", a printing concern who specialized in production of postcards. They were parents to 3 known children: Lucy Hawkins Higgs (c. 1897) and Frances Sherwood Higgs (c. 1901), Sherbet/Sherwood (c. 1905). The couple reside for a time in Atlanta, GA (c. 1920).
James Sherwood Higgs died in 1943 at at age 72. His wife of 48 years survived him 23 years, passing in 1966 at about age 93. She reportedly died in Philadelphia, but is buried here in Oakwood.
