The Kendall of Adams County are descended from James Kendall Sr. (b circa 1725; died in 17980), a native of Maryland, who removed from Washington County, that state, to the vicinity of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, near the close of the Revolutionary War. His wife was Ann (Lucas) Kendall, (born April 27, 1728), daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Evans) Lucas of Prince George County, Maryland. At the time of his moving to Pennsylvania, James Kendall Sr. patented a tract of 287 acres called "Brightfield" which lay two miles west of Uniontown. Here he resided until his death, which occurred early in 1798, as his will, drawn June 13, 1797, was proved Mar 13, 1798. The children of James and Ann (Lucas) Kendall, as named in his will, were, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Rena, Jeminah, James Jr., John, Samuel, and Ann (wife of Richard Lucas, who is named executor). Of these children, James Jr. and John emigrated with their families to Adams County, Ohio, and in 1803 settled about two miles north of the present village of Winchester on land purchased from Reuben Taylor, executor of Francis Taylor of Jefferson County, Kentucky; this land was the western half of Francis Taylor's Survey Number 2043.
