About James D Long
The photo is of the Lewis-Long House, built by the Lewis family then bought by James D Long about 1849. The house is the registry of historic buildings and still stands in Sumpter, Alabama. From that house James D Long managed his plantation including about 80 slaves, who are all named in his will of 1853. He was preceded in death (1858( by his mother, Elizabeth Burney Long, who lived with him, and his wife. He left only an adopted daughter, who was given much of the estate when she came of age. The remainder of the estate, including almost all of the slaves, were given to his brothers and sisters. He names John Long, my 3r great grandfather in his will, leaving him 70 acres of land in Alabama.
