About James Meehan
MEEHAN James (Friendship)
Born in 1774 in Shinrone, County Offaly, he was a surveyor and schoolmaster as well as a sergeant in the United Irishmen by 1798. His surveying skills were in immediate demand in NSW, and he received a conditional pardon in 1805 and an absolute pardon in 1806. He later said he surveyed every farm that was measured from 1803 to 1821. He also explored with John Oxley and Hamilton Hume, and laid out towns such as Windsor, Hobart, Bathurst and Liverpool. Meehan died at Macquarie Fields in April 1826.
