About James Thomas Newell, {Australian Immigrant}
James Newell was sentenced to death in Cambridge after being tried at the Isle of Ely for robbery but the sentence was commuted to transportation for life
and he was conveyed aboard "Sir William Bensley".
Arrived 1816 New South Wales, as a convict.
Arr. possibly during Major Lockyer's settlement of Albany 1826. He was an ex-convict from Tasmania who was granted permission to stay when Lockyer went to N.S.W.
The family made a living laboring, lime burning & sealing & made several voyages in very small craft to SA.

Arrived on the "Amity" when it sailed into King George Sound 25th Dec 1825.
James was a New South Wales convict given a ticket-of-leave when the NSW government pulled out of the settlement and he stayed behind with his family.
